Leadership
-
Leadership is not to be confused with management; leaders inspire people to perform at levels beyond their own expectations…and then get out of the way!
Now listen up. Do this, do that, do it by then…and then tomorrow do it some more only faster and better and with less people. I guess we’ve all experienced that type of leadership (I actually use the term extremely loosely!).
There have probably been more books written about leadership than anything else, and loads of analysis that has led to many a ‘Theory’. I suppose its also a topic on which we’ve all got an opinion since most of us will have experienced different styles of leadership in our time and even if we haven’t we can talk lucidly about the ‘leaders’ we see in sport or politics as portrayed through the media.
What’s clear to us is that leadership definitely isn’t management….but the two are connected!
Leadership tends to be more about behaviour and less about skills. Leaders often have a compelling tale to tell and do so with conviction, so much so that others are inclined to follow and to believe in that message.
So are leaders born or made? Actually, does it matter!
We believe that what’s more important is that we can learn to understand more about leadership, its styles, applications and the likely responses of others.
To identify the things that usually need to be present for leaders to be successful; conviction, clarity, humility, appreciating the value in others and the limitations of ourselves, desire, hunger and the ability challenge, but most of all when to lead and when to get out of the way !
